There are options out there, but they can be hard to pin down—and there are a lot of talented people interested in working in the positions that are available. Here is what I tell folks who contact me about working in the illicit heritage field. 

I recommend becoming involved in ARCA (the Association for Research into Crimes against Art) the nonprofit I work with.  

If you are interested in learning about prospective employers in the area, then consider the ARCA Postgraduate Certificate, which has a broad scope, and offers career-building and networking opportunities. The summer program brings together experts in law, art history, criminology—and most importantly has practical courses for insuring, protecting and recovering illicit art.
