I'll defer to the archaeologists, but it is my understanding that often times when a new site is discovered, archaeologists will study a part of a site, but when they leave, looters will come in; either at night or when the site is left when summer digs have concluded. The authors also make reference to this kind of thing at Morgantina.

The market certainly drives looting, and this book does a terrific job showing in detail how many turned a blind eye to the problem. But I also think it is a sad reflection of the debate that one cannot even have the conversation about what role archaeologists can play in reducing looting or engaging with local communities. Do nations of origin merely have to enact a national ownership declaration and call it a day? Francesco Rutelli is quoted in the book as saying Italy is partially to blame for looting as well.

I would argue both groups do have a role to play, some archaeologists ask far too much of domestic and international legal systems and law enforcement—an argument others like Paul Bator and Merryman have made more persuasively than I could.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00815004368881797395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35183976.post-82515359457836775332011-05-28T01:14:45.204-05:002011-05-28T01:14:45.204-05:00Derek

Are you suggesting that the "archaeological community" and "the nations of origin" have been responsible for the looting of archaeological sites?
Best wishes
DavidDavid Gillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13164794689385933318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35183976.post-15329597189088557722011-05-25T09:34:44.961-05:002011-05-25T09:34:44.961-05:00Great summary of a complex book that reads more li...Great summary of a complex book that reads more like a novel than a superb nonfiction narrative.Dr. Jack Finchamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08806534929252469206noreply@blogger.com
