This item was most definitely looted either 60 years ago or more recently. How it came to the Webbers though is a bit of a mystery. Perhaps it was acquired/stolen from a private collector (who had him/herself acquired it through dubious means).

I honestly do not believe for a second that it was sitting in some antique shop. Even to the ignorant surely this must have presented itself as an extraordinary item.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35183976.post-21921397476210800562008-05-30T04:20:00.000-05:002008-05-30T04:20:00.000-05:00Hi Derek,Congrats on completing the doctorate. Well done.

As for the Achaemenid cup at Duke's, I was interested in your speculative comments. Part of me agrees with your gnawing scepticism, but isn't it a shame that even an 'heirloom' with a seemingly legitimate provenance (i.e. by descent over a couple of generations) now has to be treated as suspicious, 'guilty until proven innocent'. That now seems to be the prevalent doctrine in provenance approaches - one that casts aspersion on everything, even those objects that came through during what many see as a Golden Age of collecting.

Have you read Cuno's book yet? I've been among his fiercest critics, but he does raise some interesting points that pertain as much to objects like this cup as to the broader picture.
Enjoy your US trip.
All best
TomTom Flynnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03489139994256007910noreply@blogger.com
